Santa Cruz sheriff's deputies raided a homeless protest camp at the county courthouse after midnight Saturday, arresting seven people and issuing 19 citations.Deputies said about 70 people have been camping out in front of the building since July 4.On Monday, sheriff'sThe group was protesting the city's camping ban, which prohibits sleeping on private property from 11 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.Officials said the deputies confronted the campers at about 12:15 a.m. and told them they were violating the state's anti-lodging law.Deputies said about half of the demonstrators left and those who refused to sign the citation or leave were arrested.

  1. The camp wasn't "busted up", but, as anticipated, assaulted by sheriff's deputies on their 5th raid as described in prior stories. The Saturday night/Sunday morning attack was followed by another on Sunday night/Monday morning and Monday night/Tuesday morning.

This morning (Wednesday August 11) the PeaceCamp moved to City Hall.

Gary Johnson, the last remaining activist in custody was released.

Police issued the first Camping Ban citation to Badger-Eyes Bob, shortly after PeaceCamp arrived at 809 Center St. (City Hall). "The sheriff's gave us a 30-day reprieve," Curbhugger Chris noted with a laugh. "The police gave us 30 minutes."

PeaceCamp continues to live and flourish across from the Main Public Library.

Bring food, blankets, and high spirits.

  2. More about Gary's release? How is he? What does he need in the way of nutrition and personal support? I'm sure glad to know he and Ed Frey are working together on these criminal sleeping issues. Where was he hidden in the labyrinth of state people-keeping Monday and yesterday morning, when some of us sought out his thirty seconds before our County's equivalent of a Magistrate; me, over an hour checking each courtroom docket and peeking in every galley?
